Archivist I - Library and Government Reports Specialist

Grade 14 ($58,428.00 - $90,709.00/year)
Position Description:
This position is a professional librarian position within the library services unit of the Maryland State Archives, engaged in acquiring and cataloging resources of government reports and publications as well as secondary source published material. This position reports to the Director of Library Services.
The focus of the position is the acquisition, cataloging, preservation and access to the reports and publications of state, county, and local government. This position will also support the archives through the strategic acquisition and cataloging of secondary print material that complements the work of the Archives and/or the records held by the Archives, for staff and public use in the Archives search room. In addition to regular cataloging and collection management duties, the position will assist in reference duties in the Archives search room and remote services, specific to relevant inquiries related to Government Publications or Library holdings. This position also assists in various student outreach and educational programs, such as the Maryland State Archives internship program.
Job duties include the following:
- Selects, acquires, and processes all Government Publications holdings, in print and electronic format. Performs original and copy cataloging; recommends and implements strategies for improving acquisition of government publications' maintains the catalog of government publications utilizing best practices within the field of Library Services.
- Develops and implements a housing, preservation, and access plan for physical Government Publications.
- Selects, acquires, and catalogs materials for the MSA Library, developing and coordinating preservation plan as needed. Performs original and copy cataloging; recommends acquisition of secondary publications; maintains the catalog of library materials utilizing best practices within the field of Library Services.
- Keeps Government Publications and Library administration files and records, documenting practices and procedures. Maintains cataloging and usage statistics and assists with writing reports on the scope and functions of the Library Services unit. Maintains and updates processes manual(s).
- Provides reference services. Assists staff and patrons in the use of Government Publications and the Library, and answers bibliographic questions about Maryland topics. Researches selected topics in Maryland government and history for executive staff, upon request. Provides interlibrary loan services to staff.
- Participates in working group within the agency, meets with sister state agencies and other across the profession, as called upon, to discuss and address special topics and concerns such as strategic planning, report writing, joint projects, and grant applications. Makes recommendations to the Director of Library Services and/or the Information Technology department about necessary technical resources.
- Designs projects suitable for an archivist trainee, skilled volunteer, and internships in Government Publications and the Library. Trains and supervises these student interns, archivist trainee and/or volunteers.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience: Six years of experience in professional archival work with public records.
Notes:
1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and two years of professional archival experience for the required experience.
2. Candidates may substitute academic credit from an accredited college or university at the rate of thirty credit hours for each year for the required experience.
3. Candidates may substitute two years of experience in the Archival Assistant series classification for required education and up to four years of the required experience.
4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Archivist classifications or Archivist specialty codes in the Library and Archives field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
Preferred/Desired Qualifications:
Successful completion of one year professional experience cataloging print and/or born digital published resources
Successful completion of 18 credits in Library/Information Science from an ALA accredited LIS program
Experience utilizing ILS software(s) to manage resources
Experience cataloging in MARC format and/or RDA standard compliance
Experience working with government publications
