Hartford, CT – Allen Ramsey has been appointed Connecticut’s 6th State Archivist, succeeding Lizette Pelletier who retired on May 30, 2025. Allen has more than 16 years of experience in the archives profession, most recently serving as Connecticut’s Assistant State Archivist since 2013.


“We are delighted to have Allen stepping into this new role within the agency,” said State Librarian Deborah Schander. “The State Archives plays a vital role in preserving Connecticut’s history and making it accessible to state and local officials, researchers, students, and members of the public. Allen has a deep understanding of our state’s rich resources and archival best practices, and the State Archives will continue to flourish under his leadership.”

“I am honored to step into the role of Connecticut’s next State Archivist,” said State Archivist Allen Ramsey. “I look forward to continuing the work I’ve been doing with my team to build on our strong foundation and ensure that Connecticut’s historical records are preserved and accessible to inform the future.”

As Assistant State Archivist, Allen has been responsible for the day-to-day oversight of the State Archives’ off-site records facility, served as project manager for a Congressionally Directed Spending project to research a secure digital preservation repository, was lead author on Recommendations of the State Librarian Concerning the Digitization of Military Records study report for the General Assembly, and numerous other archival projects.

Allen joined the Connecticut State Library in 2010 as Government Records Archivist. He holds a Master of Library and Information Science with an Archives concentration from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee, a Master of Arts in History and a Public History Certificate from the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire, and a Bachelor of Arts in History with a minor in Political Science from Winona State University. He currently serves as a member of the Connecticut State Historical Records Advisory Board and as Vice President of the Council of State Archivists.

About the Connecticut State Archives

The General Assembly designated the State Library as the official State Archives in 1909. The State Archives documents the evolution of state public policy and its implementation, the rights and claims of citizens, and the history of Connecticut and its people. Its collections include more than 53,000 cubic feet of records (132.5 million pages) and more than 5 terabytes of electronic records that have existed only in a digital format (equal to approximately 255 million pages). Treasures of its collections include the Fundamental Orders of 1639; the Royal Charter of 1662; the first 12 Proposed Amendments to the United States Constitution, 1789; World War I Military Service Questionnaires in the Records of the State Council of Defense, 1913-1920 (RG 030); and the Woman Suffrage Association papers, 1869-1921 (RG 101).
